Prof. Denis Smyth of University of Toronto will look at the British memory of and reflection upon their struggle against Irish irregular combatants during the period 1919 to 1921 and how that struggle inspired and informed the British guerrilla campaign against the Fascist dictators; he will also discuss the role of Irish individuals — especially Lieutenant Colonel Blair “Paddy” Mayne — as members of the British Special Forces fighting behind enemy lines during World War Two.
