Tuskegee Airmen of WWII Visit Cooper Union
The Cooper Union Albert Nerken School of Engineering will welcome distinguished World War II pilots today at a special lecture in The Great Hall. The honored guests are members of the famous Tuskegee Airmen—a group of African-American military pilots who fought for a then-segregated US Military during World War II. Honored for their skill and bravery in the face of discrimination, these veterans will speak on their experience as servicemen and aeronautical engineers during the war.
The Airmen’s remarks will be accompanied by presentations from students enrolled in Cooper’s Summer Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program, an intensive, six-week pre-college program that immerses students in hands-on engineering design and problem solving. One of their summer projects, “STEM takes Flight,” employs aeronautical engineering as a mechanism for teaching a variety of topics including mathematics, physics, geography, earth science and more.
Students will share their experiences in simulated flight alongside the honored Tuskegee Airmen, contributing to a cross-generational dialogue focused on the historic and fast-evolving field of aeronautic engineering. Light reception to follow.
