Who Is Jack Goldstein? Symposium

This extended day of discussion brings together a number of artists who emerged alongside Jack Goldstein in the 1970s. It will focus on the legendary Pictures exhibition curated by Douglas Crimp in 1977 as well as the influential post-studio classes of John Baldessari at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles where Goldstein received his MFA. Panel discussions examine the particular circumstances of the art world during the 70s and 80s along with the impact of the Pictures Generation on artists today. Artist and filmmaker Morgan Fisher presents the keynote lecture, and panelists include artists Robert Longo, Matt Mullican, Troy Brauntuch, Kathryn Andrews and Paul Pfeiffer. Art historians Julia Robinson (NYU) and Claire Bishop (CUNY Graduate Center) will moderate the discussions.
