Building Islands

From filled-in shorelines and deepened harbors to new island bird habitats and toxic site remediation, New York City is built on, and continues to grow, thanks to dredge. Gena Wirth and Tim Maly of the Dredge Research Collaborative will use Jamaica Bay as a departure point for talking about the complex systems of sediment-handling practices.

This program is part of a series of programs accompanying Sea Level: Five Boroughs at Water’s Edge. Each program will examine the physical layers of the past as they relate to the historical and emotional dimensions of the city.
