Champions of Change 2016: Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross Public Service Award | Hon. Eric H. Holder, Jr. and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

PHR2The New York Society for Ethical Culture as one of the founding institutions behind New York’s social justice movement, is proud to recognize those who have done exceptional work for the good of our nation.

Proceeds benefit Supportive Televisiting Service program designed to aid hundreds of New York area children with incarcerated or hospitalized parents or grandparents.

This year we honor Hon. Eric H. Holder, Jr. and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand

Hon. Eric H. Holder, Jr. Serving under President Barack Obama for six years as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, Eric Holder was the first African-American and the third longest serving Attorney General in U.S. history. In 2015, Holder returned as a Partner at Covington & Burling, LLP, the law firm where he had previously served for eight years. Including his tenure as Attorney General, Holder has served in government for over thirty years in various positions requiring U.S. Senate confirmation by Presidents Obama, Clinton, and Reagan. Mr. Holder is a strong advocate for social justice and internationally recognized leader.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Kirsten Gillibrand has served both in Congress and the Senate. In 2009, Gillibrand was appointed by the Governor to fill the U.S. Senate seat of Hillary Clinton. Reelected in 2012, she has remained a staunch proponent of reform in the military’s handling of sexual assaults; supporter of the college Campus Accountability and Safety Act to reduce campus sexual assaults and a strong advocate of gay rights and equality for women. Dr Phyllis Harrison-Ross The NYSEC Public Service Award is named for and acknowledges the lifetime achievements of Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross, a psychiatrist and pediatrician, who is currently serving as a Commissioner for the New York State Commission of Corrections and Chair of its Medical Review Board. She has long been a dedicated and outstanding public servant, particularly in the area of incarceration and community mental health. She is a NYSEC Trustee and Chair of the NYSEC affiliate, United Social Services, Inc.

Entry to our 100-year-old building and meeting rooms is available for most wheelchair users with prior arrangements. Please call ahead (212-874-5210 x107) for setup of our portable system and plan to arrive one hour before start time.
