For Conduct and Innocents: A Multimedia Performance | Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Third Reich

Dietrich Bonhoeffer“For Conduct and Innocents,” a multimedia performance commemorating the martyrdom of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German cleric and staunch opponent of the Third Reich, will be presented at 2pm on Sunday, October 18 at Trinity Church (Broadway at Wall Street, Lower Manhattan). Bonhoeffer was hanged in 1945 for taking part in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. This event is part of the worldwide commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Pastor Bonhoeffer’s execution by the Nazis.

The performance is adapted for the stage by J. Chester Johnson from his original poem, and will be directed by playwright Alan Baxter. Actorsincluding Robert Scott, Frank Romano, and Emily Kitchenswill portray significant moments in the martyrdom of Bonhoeffer, aided by the Trinity Movement Choir, serving as a Greek chorus, whose members will offer dance-based commentary on the proceedings, choreographed by Marilyn Green. The production includes film footage of World War II and German concentration camps; music by composer Paul Knopf for a planned film on Bonhoeffer; and a computer-generated musical piece.

In addition, the Trinity Youth Chorus will premiere a work for youth choir composed by Atlanta-based choral director and composer Diane Abdi Robertson. The composition is based on the poignant poem “Dream,” the work of a teenage Polish Jew, Abraham Koplowicz, who already had a reputation for lyric poetry when he was killed in a concentration camp.
