Party Like It’s 1865! Green-Wood Recreates Niblo’s Pleasure Garden of Yore

Green-Wood’s fifth annual celebration of “permanent resident” William Niblo (1789-1878) is here! On Saturday, July 22, the Cemetery will transform into a 19th-century pleasure garden for a one-of-a-kind show with entertainment curated by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, masters of vaudeville and the performing arts.

This outdoor extravaganza begins just before twilight with the flair of authentic 19th century entertainment, including fire eaters, contortionists, fan dancers, games, music, and so much more.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic dinners and beverages as they enjoy the show on the banks of Crescent Water, one of Green-Wood’s beautiful glacial ponds, in front of Niblo’s stately mausoleum. After the show, Niblo’s final resting place will be open for candlelit exploration.

Niblo’s Garden was the Radio City Music Hall of its day. The fashionable theater-garden, located in Manhattan on Broadway between Prince and Crosby seated 3,200 persons and featured acrobats, vaudeville, dramas, musical concerts, and operas and was the destination for entertainment in New York City. Niblo’s Garden was also the site of America’s first work of musical theater. It was demolished in 1895.

$40; $35 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and the Brooklyn Historical Society. To find out more information or to make online reservations, call 718-210-3080 or visit www.green-wood.com/toursevents. Reservations are recommended.
