McPherson is George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University and the author of numerous books on the Civil War, including Battle Cry of Freedom. Harold Holzer (moderator) has written and edited 50 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era including Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion, which won the 2015 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
