What’s Working in Public Education?

Road sign to education and future

Often when we discuss the education system in this country we approach the conversation from a deficit model and askhow is the education broken and what can we do to fix it? In this seminar we will use our own experiences as students, teachers and parents to discuss pertinent issues of education; approaching the topic with the understanding that the system is actually not broken, but functioning exactly in the way that it was designed. Some of the topics covered will be: the history of public education in America, “progressive” pedagogy, charter schools, high stakes testing, common core standards, and more.

Structure: There will be a mix of lecture and discussionsharing of questions, experiences and expertise to come to a new understanding of a familiar and relevant topic.

Owa Brandstein taught English and Literacy for 18 years in various public schools throughout the U.S. Through these experiences and in his current role as an administrative instructional coach for renewal schools in New York, he has developed a unique perspective and understanding of pertinent and relevant issues related to public education.
