Ezekiel J. Emanuel is a knowledgeable, forthright, and morally engaged guide to the American health care system. A doctor, a bioethicist, a former advisor to the Obama administration, and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Emanuel has spent a generation writing, thinking, and advocating on health care reform. In his new book, Reinventing American Health Care, he offers a passionate defense of the Affordable Care Act, writing that “the ACA will increasingly be seen as a world historical achievement.”
Emanuel is is Diane v.S. Levy and Robert M. Levy University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the university’s vice provost for global initiatives and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy. An oncologist by training, Emanuel served as special advisor for health policy to the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget from 2009 to 2011.
Journalist James Traub will interview Emanuel and then the floor is open for questions from the audience, followed by a reception.
Traub writes a column for Foreign Policy‘s website entitled “Terms of Engagement” and writes, as well, for Foreign Policy magazine. He has worked as a staff writer for The New Yorker and a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine, reporting widely from Africa and the Middle East. He is the author of five books, and is currently writing a biography of John Quincy Adams.
