The Bowery was the birthplace of Yiddish theater and the music that fueled it. Although it was created by immigrants from Eastern Europe, it took off once the community laid down new roots in New York. With its wildly popular and unique musical numbers, Yiddish theater became an American phenomenon, deeply influencing Hollywood and the “Broadway” sound. Join us for a performance by born and raised Yiddish performer, Mike Burstyn, and a panel discussion with historians, ethnomusicologists, and the curator ofYiddish Theater, Edna Nahshon. Nahshon will lead a brief tour of the exhibition before the event.
