The ensemble offers an early look at its new project with a short excerpt from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure followed by a conversation with the company and artistic director John Collins.
For 25 years, Elevator Repair Service has been one of the most innovative experimenters in New York theater, staging texts ranging from Supreme Court transcripts (Arguendo, 2013) to playwright Sibyl Kempson’s Fondly, Collette Richland (2015). Its adaptations of classic American literature — especially Gatz (2010), a performance of the entire text of The Great Gatsby called “the most remarkable achievement in theater of the decade” by The New York Times — have established the downtown troupe as a major creative force. ERS now turns its attention to William Shakespeare, tackling one of his so-called “problem plays.” ERS is currently in early stages of work on the piece, co-produced by The Public Theater where it will premiere in an upcoming season.
