Taste of Science: Whales

Whales are known for their impressive size and migration patterns, but how do scientists study the behavior of these elusive creatures? Join Drs. Joy Reidenberg (Mt. Sinai) and Howard Rosenbaum (Columbia University/AMNH) in our upcoming event on cetacean research, from how whales produce intricate songs to the identification of local whales in the NYC area. Dive deeper with a whale-based activity, and help us kick off the summer season with awesome science and refreshing beer!

Dr. Joy Reidenberg | Leviathan Lullaby: Loud, Low, and Long

How do baleen whales make sounds? Here’s the conundrum: A 25 meter long whale makes a sound with a wavelength of 75 meters (three times its body length). How is this possible?  Whales make sounds using air-generated vibrations, but no one knows yet how they transfer them to water. This short talk will show the anatomy of the sound producing apparatus, and then open it up for discussion about the various proposed mechanisms.

Dr. Howard Rosenbaum

Did you know that there are whales just off New York, sometimes just miles from our shores.  A native New Yorker and global whale expert, Howard will be speaking about the incredible cetaceans in NY’s waters and on-going and cutting-edge research, as well as efforts to protect these amazing creatures and the ecosystems in which they live….
