Art & Science Panel: Symbiotic Relationships in the Garden

Scott McIntire will lead a panel with Tupper Thomas, Carlos C. Brown, and Nicole Antebi to discuss their artistic practice in relation to gardening and organic cultivation. With sources ranging from Long Island backyards, to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, the presenters will explore the scientific, social, and mystic qualities of the greenery we choose to plant, against that which is native. The symbiosis between flora, fauna, animal, and human, permeates their work.

Scott Mcintire–A decade of painting and photographing Long Island’s North Fork has opened McIntire’s interest in the precarious balance between nature and the man-made. His unique approach to composition combines information about the main subject and its surrounding environment. He uses unseen energy fields: cellular transmissions, radio waves, and sounds, to present complete statements between the world we see, and the invisible, yet physically important world.

Nicole Antebi Nicole Antebi works in non-fiction animation, motion graphics, installation while simultaneously connecting and creating opportunities for other artists through larger curatorial and editorial projects such as Water, CA and Winter Shack. She recently coproduced Just Browsing, a five part web series about the internet written by Joanne Mcneil. Antebi was the 2015 recipient of a Jerome Foundation film/media grant for a forthcoming film about the border landscapes of El Paso and Juárez.

Carlos C. Brown–Carlos Cuellar Brown is a New York City essayist and media artist whose essays on social theory and metaphysics have appeared online on Opendemocracy, Kosmos Journal, and Pelican Web. For Performa 13, Carlos moderated a performative Google panel discussing consciousness and art. For their May 2017 issue, Permaculture Design Magazine published his essay “Less is More.” In October  2017 Carlos participated in the Miami New Media Festival with his video piece: Deconstruction 1:56

Tupper Thomas–Thomas was the founding president of the Prospect Park Alliance, and she oversaw the 580-acre greensward and its revitalization for more than two decades until 2011. She then went on to serve as the executive director of New Yorkers for Parks — a nonprofit that has lobbied against so-called parkland alienation for more than a century now.
