Racism and the Criminalization of Poverty: 21st Century Debtors’ Prisons in the Age of Mass Incarceration

On November 11th, nonprofit JusticeAid will hold a free public forum “Racism and the Criminalization of Poverty: 21st Century Debtors’ Prisons in the Age of Mass Incarceration” . The forum will feature speakers from the ACLU, Civil Rights Corps, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, and Essie Justice Group. There will also be poetry and vocal performances, and a VR experience.

Jeffery Robinson of the ACLU will give a multi-media presentation Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America. A panel discussion will follow, featuring Gina Clayton, Director/Founder of Essie Justice Group; Alec Karakatsanis, Director/Founder of Civil Rights Corps; and Johnny Perez, Director of U.S. Prison Programs at The National Religious Campaign Against Torture, who overcame three years of solitary confinement. Poet Randall Horton and vocalist Abena Koomson Davis will perform, and guests will be invited to experience The Cell, a virtual reality installation.
