In 1793, Thomas Jefferson and the American Philosophical Society became entangled in a natural history/political debacle which involved sending an ambitious French botanist named Andre Michaux on an expedition to the Pacific. If this expedition had been successful, it would have all but made the Lewis and Clark expedition a decade later a historical footnote. However, when Michaux is pulled into a covert spy mission, everything is made more complicated.
