Vintage Black Glamour
The National Arts Club hosts a conversation with Nichelle Gainer, author of Vintage Black Glamour, about her book and research. Inspired by her family history, Gainer has unearthed a revealing treasure trove of historic photographs of famous actors, dancers, writers and entertainers who worked in the 20th-century entertainment business, and continue to inspire to the present day. In her presentation, alongside the familiar images and stories of renowned performers such as Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin, Prince, Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier, are those of less well-remembered figures such as Bricktop, Pearl Primus, Diana Sands, Nipsey Russell, the Nicholas Brothers, Stephen Burrows and Donny Hathaway.Gainer is the author of Vintage Black Glamour and Vintage Black Glamour: Gentlemen’s Quarters. She has contributed to many major magazines and websites, including InStyle, Essence, and Glamour. She has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC News, The Guardian, and NPR.
