On the eve of the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, revisit the history of the single most destructive event of the 20th century, and the fight to tell the public the truth of its impact. In her new book, “Fallout: The Hiroshima Cover-up and the Reporter Who Revealed It to the World,” journalist and historian Lesley Blume explores the story of John Hersey, a reporter with The New Yorker who cut through misinformation campaigns, interviewed survivors of the blasts, and uncovered a US propaganda effort to downplay the true human cost of atomic warfare. In an era of “Fake News,” Hersey’s work to uncover the truth becomes all the more meaningful. Blume is joined in conversation by Adam Gopnik, whose countless award-winning writings have carried on The New Yorker’s tradition of reportage.
