The Jewelry of Marie Zimmermann

One of the most versatile artists of the early 20th century, Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972) studied at the Art Students League and Pratt Institute. In 1901 she was invited to join The National Arts Club, where she established residence in 1910 and remained for over 25 years. Although trained in painting and sculpture, she was primarily a metalworker who claimed to make “everything from tiaras to tombstones.”

This lecture by Beth Carver Wees, Curator Emerita of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American Wing, surveys Zimmermann’s career, with a focus on her highly original jewelry designs.
