The United States has struggled to forge peace between Israel and the Palestinians for more than half a century – yet it remains elusive. Two-state solutions, one-state solutions, settlements, annexations, negotiations from Geneva to Camp David have all come to naught. Two of America’s most experienced diplomatic specialists in the Middle East will discuss where we’ve been, where we are and whether there’s anywhere left to go to find peace.

Twice Former US ambassador to Israel and the Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, Martin Indyk also framed the US policy during the Clinton administration of ‘containing’ Iraq and Iran. He later served as President Obama’s Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. He is currently a Distinguished Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

For more than 12 years – under Presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama – Ambassador Ross played a leading role in shaping US involvement in the Middle East, dealing directly with the parties in negotiations. He was instrumental in assisting Israelis and Palestinians to reach the 1995 Interim Agreement, brokered the 1997 Hebron Accord and facilitated the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty. He is currently Counselor and Distinguished Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a Professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Jewish Civilization.
