Art for Art’s Sake

Art for Art’s Sake

Some famous guy, maybe AE Housman, said once that some people claim they like poetry but what they actually like is something IN the poetry, which is not the same thing. Let’s talk about poetry as the thing-in-itselfding-an-sich as intimidating hardcore German philosophers would say. Let’s talk about Hedonism and Social Activism and look at some Ashbery and Stevens and Brecht. I will bring all the poetry you need in handout form, because I am a NICE GUY.

Teacher:

Geoff Klock

Geoff Klock loves movies. Specifically, he’s fascinated by the odd, often baffling results when visionary directors are provided legit studio budgets, yet limited restrictions on delivering the films they want to make. Ang Lee’s Hulk, anyone? Darren Aronofsky re-writing the Bible for Noah?
