Atul Gawande is a surgeon and the director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health-system innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston. He is the author of “Complications,” “Better,” and “The Checklist Manifesto.” He has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1998, and two of his pieces have won National Magazine Awards.
