The Unanswered Question… In 1973, over the course of six landmark lectures at Harvard University, Leonard Bernstein masterfully tackled the enigmatic meaning of music and defined for a generation a new way to listen. He titled his epic series The Unanswered Question. 50 years later, the Library presents a contemporary reaction, re-evaluation of Bernstein’s Norton Lectures. Lecture excerpts that capture Bernstein’s theories about musical “linguistics” and music in the future will be tested against contemporary perspectives by living composers and performers that work with ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble). Live performances or archival recordings of new music will either affirm, challenge, or revise Bernstein’s claims.
