From Bicycle Advocacy to CitiBike: A Recent History of Bicycling in NYC

The two-wheeled life has entered an exciting new chapter in New York. The city, site of the country’s first bike path (built in 1894 along Ocean Parkway), is now veined with some 300 miles of bike lanes throughout all five boroughs.

bike_advocacy_heroMore New Yorkers than ever are commuting by bicycle and the CitiBike program has established cycling as a viable form of public/private transportation. Join us for a series of short presentations exploring the recent past of New York City’s bicycling movement, offering an assessment of where the cycling movement has been and where it is headed.

Participants include We Bike NYC, CitiBike, Cycle Hawk, Biking Public Project, historians David Herlihy and Harry Schwartzman, scholar Dr. Michael Smart, lawyer Steve Vaccaro and others.
