Book Club with David Nicholls

We may be in lockdown, but many of us are using this time as an opportunity to catch up on all those books we’ve always been meaning to read. Please join us for a new online Book Club, in which the Guardian’s chief books writer Lisa Allardice will be in conversation with leading writers to discuss their best-loved novels, the creative process and isolation. They will also be answering your questions. Bring your own wine!

Acclaimed novelist and screenwriter David Nicholls will talk about his most recent book, Sweet Sorrow.

Sweet Sorrow is a poignant and funny story about the life-changing summer of 16 year-old Charlie Lewis. Unremarkable in every way, Charlie experiences the inset of summer with a kind of dread. His exams didn’t go to plan, and now he must spend long weeks looking after his father. When Fran Fisher bursts into his life unexpectedly, Charlie, despite himself, begins to hope.

Nicholls’ much loved novel, One Day was an international publishing phenomenon which took the world by storm. His next novel was the Man Booker-longlisted Us, which will soon be coming to the small screen, in a four-part adaptation starring Tom Hollander. More recently, he wrote the screenplay for Patrick Melrose, for which he received an Emmy nomination and won a BAFTA.

Running time: 60 minutes.
