Book Launch: The Soho Press Book of ‘80s Short Fiction

Edited by Dale Peck in conversation with contributors Sarah Schulman, Chris Bram, Jaime Manrique, Jessica Hagedorn and John Keene.

About The Soho Press Book of ‘80s Short Fiction:

Our society has begun to explore, and the media has paid much attention to, what it means to “be a woman.” However, as spoken-word poet, TED speaker, and YouTube sensation Sarah Kay argues, this conversation is often focused on what it means to be a woman in relation to others: a mother, a sister, a wife, a girlfriend, a daughter. As Sarah recently wrote in The Huffington Post, “I believe those relationships are important. I also think it is possible to define ourselves solely as individuals…We have the power to define ourselves: by telling our own stories, in our own words, with our own voices.”

In her latest single-poem volume, The Type, illustrated by Sophia Janowitz, Sarah takes readers on a lyrical journey toward empowerment, while exploring the promise, and reality, of what it means to be a woman—as an individual.

Just in time for Women’s History Month (March) and National Poetry Month (April), The Type is a beautiful celebration of womanhood, exploring its various expressions once her commitments to others, physical and emotional, have been shed. Filled with humility, acceptance, and compassion, Sarah’s poetry comes alive with the vibrancy, strength, vulnerability, and beauty that embodies the complex and artfully created beings that women are.
