Young people often see reading as a grueling task, something to finish quickly so they can watch TV, or play games on the internet. What can have a girl or boy love books and see reading as the wonderful thing it truly is? On the other hand–how can those children who happily “get lost” in books not feel they’re in a world separate from the world of confusing people? How can they use reading to value people more?
The Learning to Like the World class of Saturday, October 21st, will be “BOOKS CAN TAKE YOUR FEELINGS EVERYWHERE!” This children’s event, taking place from 11 AM to 12:15 PM, is for boys and girls ages 5 through 12, and is taught by Aesthetic Realism consultants Barbara Allen and Robert Murphy.
Youngsters will learn what the education Aesthetic Realism, founded by the poet and critic Eli Siegel, explains: the deepest desire of every child, every person, is to like the world. Books, Aesthetic Realism shows, are a huge, wonderful means of meeting that hope in every young person.
Children will be able really to love words and books as they see the meaning of these beautiful sentences, from Eli Siegel’s book Children’s Guide to Parents & Other Matters:
“Can you think of anything, James, that can’t get into a book? People are likely any day to new thoughts or happenings into a book. If you read a book about the sea, it can go pretty far in making you feel the mist on the water, the motion of the ship, the dark look of the sky, the wind that soon may be rising….When we read books our minds “go out” more, work more, to have things happen to us….Books can show that life can make sense, while it makes you wonder, and think, and hope, and see what is right under your feet.”
