A conversation with the artist and Barnard professor Hisham Matar
The scale of African and Arab migration to Europe has reached unprecedented levels. Never before has the journey across the Mediterranean been more dangerous or more documented. Stretched between two continents and two cultures, the work of the artist Bruno Boudjelal—a Frenchman of Algerian origin—inhabits these distances. Boudjelal has a unique photographic language, one concerned with the fleeting and intimate moment. It lends his photographs an illegitimate quality, as though they were extracted against the wishes of history. On his first visit to the United States, Boudjelal will discuss his work and examine what it means to class a place home as it relates to the life and ideas of the Martinique-born French-Algerian thinker captured in his most recent book, Frantz Fanon. Q & A to follow.
