Carter Burden Gallery Announces New Exhibition by Photographer & Philanthropist Margaret Smith
A new exhibition featuring the unique photographs of artist and philanthropist Margaret Smith will be on display November 30 through December 21 at the Carter Burden Gallery, located at 548 West 28th Street #534 in Manhattan. The Carter Burden Gallery showcases the vibrant, cutting-edge and transformative art that is the product of the unique cultural wealth possessed by older professional artists.
Entitled “I TOOK THAT?!” Smith’s photographs capture moments of significance in all settings and spaces. Without a specific theme driving her work, Smith is drawn to take an image when the moment is just right—quite often on her travels to interesting places. The exhibition will take place in the East and West galleries, while the “On the Wall” space will feature the paintings of Cassandra Jennings Hall.
Smith’s first camera was a simple viewfinder with which she quickly learned that every shot was not a “keeper.” Honing her craft over many rolls of black and white film, she began developing and printing in the attic of her house in Toronto. By the time she came to New York, film developing and printing had become so much more advanced that she now works with a professional developer for her work.
Smith was born, raised, and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. With an aptitude for numbers, she worked in an aircraft company as a technical computer, the same occupation as the ladies in the recent film “Forgotten Numbers”, but many years earlier. After marrying in Toronto, Smith moved with her husband to New York in 1975 and has been in the city ever since.
All proceeds from the sale of her work will be generously donated to the Carter Burden Network, one of NYC’s oldest and most respected aging services organizations.
