Edith Windsor

Edith Windsor was the plaintiff in United States v. Windsor, a landmark case challenging the Defense of Marriage Act. In 2007, she married Thea Spyer, her partner of four decades. After Spyer died, Windsor was barred from claiming the federal estate-tax exemption for surviving spouses. She filed a lawsuit in 2010; in June, the United States Supreme Court ruled in her favor. She has received the SAGE Lifetime Achievement Award, New York University’s Presidential Medal, and the Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty.
