EgyptOmania! with “Mr. Mummy” Dr. Bob Brier

Long before Howard Carter discovered King Tut’s fully intact tomb in 1922, the world was caught up in a craze for all things Egyptian. Why the fascinated frenzy for ancient Egypt?

Dr. Bob Brier, one of the world’s foremost experts on mummies and Egyptology, excavates the events that fanned the flames of Egyptomania in New York City–Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, steamship travel that carried wealthy New Yorkers to elaborate picnics alongside the Sphinx, and the city’s monumental frenzy for an obelisk of its own.

He’ll dig deep into New York’s own “Nile style” in fashion, art, film and design. From Cleopatra’s Needle to 1920’s gilded movie palaces ornamented with Egyptian motifs, Dr. Brier will unearth the remains of architectural homages to Egyptomania right here on the Upper West Side.

Affectionately known as Mr. Mummy, Dr. Bob Brier is recognized as one of the world’s foremost experts on mummies and Egyptology. As Senior Research Fellow at Long Island University/LIU Post in Brookville, New York, he has conducted pioneering research in mummification practices and has investigated some of the world’s most famous mummies, including King Tut, Vladimir Lenin and Ramses the Great. He is the author of ten books; his most recent is Cleopatra’s Needles: The Lost Obelisks of Egypt.
