The Epic of Everest: Screening + Q&A

1924, UK, John Noel, 87 min.

Includes Q&A with Dr. Robert Barnett of the Modern Tibetan Studies Program at Columbia University.

The Rubin Museum will once again be presenting the 1924 silent masterpiece The Epic of Everest, documentary footage of George Mallory’s ill-fated expedition to climb Mount Everest. The film illustrates the unintended repercussions British showmanship had on the fate of the Tibetan nation state. As Wade Davis explains in his exemplary book on the Mallory expeditions, the unfortunate fallout from the film’s popularity was a breach in British-Tibetan relations, which prevented the Thirteenth Dalai Lama from modernizing his army and consequently made the Tibetans ill-equipped to confront the advance of the Chinese Army in 1949. The Rubin premiered the restored film in November last year. These 2015 screenings will act as a counterpoint to the release of Baltasar Kormákur’s new film Everest, a 3-D treatment of Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air.
