Escape to the Middle Ages

Based on Dr. Benton’s books, Art of the Middle Ages and Medieval Mischief: Wit and Humor in the Art of the Middle Ages, immerse yourself in the beauty of the art and architecture of the Middle Ages with Janetta Rebold Benton, PhD during these two online lectures.

Each lecture concludes with a rhymed summary and questions for the audience to discuss.

12-1 pm: Highlights of the Art and Architecture of the Middle Ages: Romanesque and Gothic Eras

Dr. Rebold Benton will highlight the finest works of architecture, sculpture, painting, stained glass, and decorative arts created in Western Europe between the 11th and 14th centuries.

1:15-2:15 pm: Medieval Mischief: Wit and Humor in the Art of the Middle Ages

Because the visual arts in Western Europe were largely in the service of the Christian Church, humor may be unexpected. This lecture demonstrates that medieval art is not always serious and solemn, for while some images are visual puns, others instruct, and still others intend to offend!
