A member of the Board of Directors, International Association of Art Critics/United States Section, Altshuler has lectured internationally on museums, exhibitions, and contemporary art.

Altshuler was the former director of Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum. His books include the recently-published Biennials and Beyond: Exhibitions that Made Art History, 1962-2002; Salon to Biennial: Exhibitions that Made Art History, 1863-1959; The Avant-Garde in Exhibition, and Isamu Noguchi.
