Film Screening: ‘Billy Liar’

In Billy Liar, the director John Schlesinger finds in Keith Waterhouse’s novel a whimsical riff on the drabness of British life as depicted in films like Karel Reisz’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and Richardson’s A Taste of Honey.

Schlesinger’s film brought together two young actors who would be among the brightest stars of the succeeding decade: Courtenay, who had debuted in Tony Richardson’s The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and then appeared in Joseph Losey’s King and Country; and Christie, who would go on to make Darling and Far from the Madding Crowd for Schlesinger, Doctor Zhivago for David Lean, and Fahrenheit 451 for Francois Truffaut.

With Tom Courtenay, Julie Christie, Wilfrid Pickles, Mona Washburne. 98 min. Great Britain.
