Social activist, scholar, theologian, and civil rights movement icon Ruby Sales will preach on “Finding Hope in History” in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday at Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan.
Ms. Sales has preached around the country on race, class, gender and reconciliation. She has done ground-breaking work on community and non-violence formation and serves as a national convener of the Every Church A Peach Church movement.
She came to national attention after organizing a demonstration with other Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee workers in 1965 to protest the actions of local Alabama white grocery store owners who had cheated their parents. The group was arrested and held in jail for six days. After being released, she went to purchase sodas at a nearby store and was threatened at gunpoint by a special county deputy. Jonathan Daniels, a White seminarian and freedom worker from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts was assassinated as he pulled Ms. Sales out of the line of fire.
