Panelists discuss the French presidential election, which will conclude with the second and final round of voting on May 7. Remarks will include a discussion of the rising popularity of Marine Le Pen and the National Front, in light of Brexit and the election of Donald Trump and rising populism in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
Cécile Alduy is Professor of French literature and culture at Stanford University and a research fellow at the CEVIPOF at Sciences Po, Paris. She is a specialist of political rhetoric, especially far right discourse, as well as immigration and nationalism in France. Her latest books explore the discourses of all the current candidates in the upcoming French presidential election include Ce qu’ils disent vraiment. Les politiques pris aux mots (Seuil 2017), and Marine Le Pen Taken to Her Words: Deciphering the New National Front’s Discourse (Seuil, 2015). Both books have received international media coverage. She is a contributor to The New Yorker, The Nation, The Atlantic, Politico, Al Jazeera America, The Boston Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Le Monde, L’Humanité, La Revue des Deux Mondes, Libération, Politico, L’Obs, among others.”
