Join us on Friday, April 13th for an Olio Happy Hour with Geoff and Manny exploring Free Will, Determinism, and Radical Nihilism
The Joker, Hamlet, and George R.R. Martin: Radical Nihilism
Professor Geoff Klock
Christopher Nolan, George RR Martin and Shakespeare each invented powerful mouthpieces for an uncomfortable and unavoidable truth — a deep and radical nihilism is at the bottom of all things; our lives are held up by illusions, useful fictions, that we invent, forget we invent, and that end up controlling us.
We can cast them aside, or remake them, at any time — but at what cost? Join me for a class that hops from Westeros, to Gotham City, to Denmark.
Free Will vs Determinism
Professor Manuel Rodeiro
We all intuitively think that we had a choice regarding what we ate for breakfast – that instead of having a bagel, I could have had a bowl of cereal. But this Olio will explore the possibility that maybe this feeling that we could have chosen otherwise is an illusion.
We will look at four arguments that challenge our understanding of free will: (1) theological argument; (2) psychological argument; (3) neuroscientific argument, and (4) physical argument. Afterwards, we will explore why we hold free will so dearly and what if anything would change if we lost our understanding of having a choice in our decisions and behavior.
