Geraldine Brooks Brings Her Novel “HORSE” to Revolution Books

Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer prize-winning novelist, will join us in-person at Revolution Books on Tuesday, April 11, reading from and discussing HORSE.
HORSE, a work of historical fiction, is based on a world-famous race horse of the pre-Civil War era, Lexington. Brooks weaves a gripping story of this horse and Jarret, an enslaved man who is the beloved and highly skilled trainer.
Brooks also excavates this history through the lens of two characters from our time, a young Black art history scholar and a woman who runs a bone lab at the Smithsonian. HORSE reads like a heart-thumping mystery while taking in art history, scientific exploration, the art of raising a horse… and most of all how slavery poisoned all of society back then and the ways its legacy continues to rip through life in America today.
“[A] sweeping tale . . . fluid, masterful storytelling . . . Horse is a reminder of the simple, primal power an author can summon by creating characters readers care about and telling a story about them—the same power that so terrifies the people so desperately trying to get Toni Morrison banned from their children’s reading lists.”
—Maggie Shipstead, The Washington Post
“… a stinging rebuke of racist and abusive humans, and a study of how the past gets recorded, remembered, and remade. . . anyone who ever grew up loving horses, anyone who dearly loves an animal, will find a cornucopia of riches in this novel.”
—Boston Globe
Geraldine Brooks is the author of several acclaimed historical novels. Brooks started as a journalist in Australia, and was a Wall Street Journal war correspondent in Bosnia, Somalia, and the Middle East. Her non-fiction works include Nine Parts of Desire, based on her experiences among Muslim women.
