Independence Day: Celebrating American Identities

Celebrate Independence Day and the many cultures of the United States’ founding era! In honor of our Citizenship Project and America’s birthday, families can meet reenactors representing diverse Revolutionary War soldiers, show their smarts in a trivia quiz, and create fun crafts that explore what it meant to be an American more than 200 years ago—and today!

Note: All activities, including performances and quizzes, are free with Museum Admission, and no RSVP is required.

Families Respond: What Does “We the People” Mean to You?
All day
Families are invited to post sticky notes on our Preamble Wall reflecting upon and responding to the opening words of the Constitution, which are featured in the monumental art installation We the People by artist Nari Ward. Share what these three powerful words mean to you on America’s birthday!

Independence Day Lunch Special: Hot Dogs and Flag Cookie Decoration
11 am – 3 pm
Enjoy kid-friendly lunch fare available for cash-only purchase on our second floor. Pick up a classic July 4th hot dog and a special flag-shaped sugar cookie that kids can decorate while they dine.

History Detective Briefcases for Families
11 am – 4 pm
Calling all history detectives! Borrow a History Detective briefcase on our fourth floor to accompany you on your visit, and start exploring our expansive new Luce Center. Go on the case as a family to discover the past through games, sketching, and activities in our new galleries. Each briefcase is free to borrow during your visit and provides a variety of fun, interactive, family centered challenges.

Please note: History Detective Briefcases are for use on the fourth floor only and must be returned before the end of your Museum visit.

Living History: The 1st Rhode Island and 3rd New Jersey Regiments
11 am – 4 pm
AT-TEN-TION! Fall in for a military drill with the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, historical reenactors portraying the Continental Army’s historic “Black Regiment.”  You’ll learn which freedoms the veterans of this troop did and did not gain after the American Revolution. You can also meet soldiers from the 3rd New Jersey Regiment’s Jersey Greys. Join them for an inside look at life on and off the battlefield, get a grip on their equipment, and ask what drove them to fight for independence.

The Hudson River Ramblers
Performances at 12, 1, and 3 pm
Each performance is 45 minutes long
Listen to tunes ‘n’ tales from the United States’ founding era! The Hudson River Ramblers will regale families with the story behind “Yankee Doodle,” introduce them to the young girl who outrode Paul Revere, and reveal why George Washington threw a tantrum on Broadway.

Funny Founders: Family Craft Activity
1 – 4 pm
Learn about America’s famous and little-known Founding Fathers and Mothers. Mix and match their portraits to create a hilariously unique founder of your very own!

Revolutionary Trivia Quiz
2 and 4 pm
Each quiz is 45 minutes long
No RSVP required, but seating is limited. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to each quiz.

Calling all trivia-lovers! Families can test their knowledge of the United States’ formation and early years at this special trivia quiz. Form a family team and join in to see who really has the Spirit of ’76! (Plus, we’ve got prizes for participants and winners!)
