He is the author of the essay collections “The Broken Estate,” “The Irresponsible Self,” and “The Fun Stuff”; “How Fiction Works,” a study of technique; and a novel, “The Book Against God.” He is Professor of the Practice of Literary Criticism at Harvard University.
