Lesser-Known Verdi Gems: Arias and Duets—I Vespri Siciliani & La Forza del Destino

Presented by Jane Marsh
Duration: 1.5 hours
Part of the Lesser-Known Verdi Gems: Arias and Duets series

Giuseppe Verdi was known for being a composer that showed an overwhelming respect for the vocal instrument. Whether it was “Sempre Libera,” Violetta’s aria in La Traviata, or the Finale in Falstaff, he always showed a keen awareness for tight musical and theatrical lines. This course will explore the lesser known Verdi gems, looking specifically at the three-part aria form and stimulating duets of his early period as well as the confrontational duets of his middle period. Join Jane Marsh in this two-part series as she explores the exceptionally stunning glory of these little known Verdi operas.

In this second lecture, Jane Marsh will explore Verdi’s libretti along with the musical and vocal imagination of his middle period. In this period, Verdi transforms Italian opera by utilizing a more colorful orchestration, while counterpointing serious and comic scenes with grandeur. There is a shift towards the French genre of grand opera, notable with extensive and sumptuous vocal presentation in the arias and duets. Verdi’s I vespri Siciliani (The Sicilian Vespers) (1855) as well as La forza del destino (The Power of Fate) (1862), meet a synthesis of Middle Verdi musical and vocal style, with grand opera hallmarks essential to the drama, and some of the most beautiful and challenging vocal writing in all opera.
