On Your Marx: Labor, Aesthetics, Identity

“On Your Marx” is a 2-week festival of art and ideas in celebration of Karl Marx’s 200th birthday, from Oct 17-28 at NYU. This festival isn’t Marx 101; instead, artists and scholars put Marxist theories and ideas to work in 21st century contexts. luciana achugar, a Brooklyn-based choreographer from Uruguay, has been making work in NYC and Uruguay independently and collaboratively since 1999. She is a two-time Bessie Award recipient and was nominated for a 2016 Bessie for Outstanding Production for her latest An Epilogue for OTRO TEATRO: True Love. She was a 2017 Alpert Award recipient, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grantee, amongst other accolades. She was one of DanceMagazine’s 2012 “25 to Watch” and her Bessie Award-winning work PURO DESEOwas named one of 2010 Time Out/NY’s “Best of Dance.” Her works also include The Pleasure Project and OTRO TEATRO. lachugar.org

Amin Husain’s interests focus on resistance and liberation, movement generated theory and practice. His research and teaching interests span debt and financialization, globalization and political economy, social movements and cultures of resistance, race, class and ethnicity in the media, and postcolonial theory. He is a founding member of Global Ultra Luxury Faction (G.U.L.F.), direct action wing of Gulf Labor Coalition; a member of Gulf Labor Coalition, a self-organized group of artists, writers, architects, curators, and other cultural workers trying to ensure worker’s rights are protected when art, labor and global capital intersect; a founding member and managing editor of Tidal: Occupy Theory, Occupy Strategy, a printed theory and strategy magazine of the Occupy movement; a founding member of MTL, a collective that combines aesthetics, research and organizing in its practice; and founding member of NYC Solidarity with Palestine.

Julie Tolentino is a performance installation maker whose work draws from a variety of visual, archival, and movement strategies. Her work has been presented at many venues, including the New Museum, The Kitchen, Danspace Project in NY; Volume, Los Angeles Contemporary, Broad at UCLA, Honor Fraser, Cypress Gallery, The Sphaerae/AXS Festival, Commonwealth & Council, The Night Gallery, Pieter, High Desert Test Sites, The Reanimation Library, The Palms in Southern California; The Lab, Joe Goode Annex, PSi Stanford in Northern California; The Wexner Center, Performa ’05 and ’13, and internationally in the UK, France, Germany, Philippines, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Greece. Tolentino was a 2017-2018 HMD Community Engagement Artist-In-Residence and a 2013-14 Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Community Artist with Larkin Street Projects in San Francisco. Tolentino is a current 2018 MFA candidate and Dean’s Distinguished Fellow of Experimental Dance at the University of California at Riverside. Other projects include serving as the long-time Provocations co-editor for TDR (The Drama Review). Tolentino was a member of ACTUP, Art Positive, House of Color and the National LGBT Suicide Hotline.
