Merle Hodge and Jamaica Kincaid

A Columbus Day program with two cherished West Indian writers. Merle Hodge’s For the Life of Laetitia is “one of the most wonderful and extraordinary portrayals of a child’s life in the English-speaking Caribbean,” wrote Jamaica Kincaid. “It is true and it is beautiful.” Kincaid has also written an introduction to Simone Schwarz-Bart’s The Bridge of Beyond, recently issued as a New York Review of Books classic, and she returns to 92Y to read from that novel (Schwarz-Bart, originally scheduled to attend as well, has fallen ill). “That a book so radical in style, in form and in content, is not widely known in this country, and its influence not deeply felt, is one of those unfortunate mysteries of Time and Place,” wrote Kincaid. “As if from out of the blue, from the Great Beyond, from the margins, a woman from Guadeloupe has given us an unforgettable hymn to the resilience and power of women.”
