Mid-Sentence | The Recovering: Leslie Jamison with Cutter Wood

Blending memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and reporting, Leslie Jamison upends the traditional addiction narrative. In addition to her own struggle, she reflects on creative geniuses whose lives and works were shaped by alcoholism and dependence, drawing connections between intoxication and creation. In a similar way, the disappearance of a small island motel owner sends Cutter Wood careening head first into a murder investigation and interviews of people within its radius. Going beyond the basic facts of the case allows for a meditation on the ways in which we hurt the ones we love.

Jamison is a columnist for the New York Times Book Review, and the author of the essay collection The Empathy Exams and the novel The Gin Closet. Wood completed an MFA in creative nonfiction at the University of Iowa in 2010 and his essays have appeared in Harper’s and other magazines. The two will discuss their respective works on toxicity and desire.
