Mr. Smith, Where Are You?

Following New-York Historical’s Friday-night screening of Frank Capra’s classic political drama Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, two experts in constitutional law and legal history explore the rich and fascinating questions about the relationship between law and justice raised in the film. Are law and justice one and the same? Are there right reasons and wrong reasons for Congress to enact a law—and do the reasons matter for the statute’s legitimacy? What is the role of public opinion? What, if anything, should constrain the press? Finally, the film raises the question of whether this tale of a naive amateur who takes on corrupt professionals can still speak to our cynical age.
