Neuroscience in the Body: Perspectives at the Periphery – Seminars in Society and Neuroscience

Buell Hall, East Gallery
Columbia University

This discussion will extend across practices distinguished by disciplinary and cultural boundaries to explore neuroscience at the periphery of the body. From the perspective of Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and the science of touch, we consider the physiological environments in which neurons are embedded. This context may provide new insight into chronic disease, from cancer to Alzheimer’s, by approaching illness from multiple therapeutic and experimental systems.

Speakers:

Narendra S. Bhatt, Honorary Research Director and Adjunct Professor, BVDU College of Ayurveda, Pune, India

Ellen A. Lumpkin, Associate Professor of Somatosensory Biology in Dermatology and Physiology & Cellular Biophysics, Columbia University

Peter Wayne, Associate Professor of Medicine and Research Director for the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Moderator:

Lan A. Li, Presidential Scholar in Society and Neuroscience, Columbia University

Free and open to the public. Reception to follow.

This event is sponsored by the Presidential Scholars in Society and Neuroscience, and is part of the Seminars in Society and Neuroscience series.
