The New Yorker Festival: North Korea

James R. Clapper, Jr., is the former U.S. director of national intelligence, having held the position under President Barack Obama from 2010 to 2017. He retired from the U.S. Armed Forces in 1995 as an Air Force lieutenant general, after having served for thirty-two years and in two combat tours. He is the recipient of the National Security Medal, three National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medals, the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, and many other honors. He is currently a Distinguished Senior Fellow for Intelligence and National Security at the Center for a New American Security.

Robert E. Kelly lives in South Korea, where he is a professor in the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy at Pusan National University. He holds a Ph.D. in international relations from Ohio State University. Dr. Kelly comments frequently on North Korea and U.S. foreign policy for outlets including the BBC, CNN, the Times, and Foreign Affairs. He briefly became famous as “BBC Dad” when, in March, 2017, his children interrupted him live on BBC News.

Suki Kim is the author of the Times best-seller “Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korean Elite” and the novel “The Interpreter,” which was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway Award. She is a contributing editor at The New Republic, and her investigative reporting and nonfiction have appeared in Harper’s, the TimesThe New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction and a Ferris Fellowship in journalism, and her 2015 TED Talk has been viewed millions of times.

Sue Mi Terry is the senior adviser on Korea for BowerGroupAsia. She was formerly a senior analyst for the C.I.A., focussing on Korean issues. She has worked on the National Intelligence Council and the National Security Council, and was a senior research scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, at Columbia University.

Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman served as Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2015, and was the lead American negotiator in the Iran nuclear deal. She served as special adviser on North Korea to President Bill Clinton, and was on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Policy Board. She is currently the senior counsellor at Albright Stonebridge Group, and a senior fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Evan Osnos joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 2008. He covers politics and foreign affairs, and his piece “How Trump Could Get Fired” appeared in the May 8, 2017, issue of the magazine. His 2014 book, “Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China,” won the National Book Award for nonfiction, and was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. He is a recipient of the Osborn Elliott Prize and the Livingston Award.
