NYC Book Launch: Jared Yates Sexton Presents “The Man They Wanted Me to Be: Toxic Masculinity and a Crisis of Our Own Making”

Part memoir and part cultural analysis, The Man They Wanted Me to Be examines the personal and societal dangers of performative gender through the lens of Jared Yates Sexton’s upbringing in a rural, patriarchal home. This deeply personal and thoroughly researched book takes a hard look at how outdated definitions of masculinity have given rise to male resentment and entitlement. Sexton exposes the true cost men themselves suffer from this toxic mix: increased rates of depression, shorter lives, misogyny, and, ultimately, suicide. Joining him in conversation is Mychal Denzel Smith, author of Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching and the forthcoming Stakes Is High. A reception will follow to celebrate the book’s New York launch.
