On Truth (and Lies) in Conversation

Please note: This event takes place at the Brooklyn Borough Hall Courtroom (209 Joralemon St.).

What is the truth? Simon Critchley, one of today’s leading contemporary philosophers and moderator of the popular New York Times philosophy series “The Stone,” presents On Truth (and Lies), a new conversation series that encourages audiences to abandon their convictions at the door and explore the ambiguity of reality.

To launch the series, Critchley turns the tables on Paul Holdengräber, the director and founder of LIVE from the New York Public Library, to examine the art of conversation, digression, and sustained dialogue. Holdengräber—an expert in what he calls “cognitive theater” and a seasoned interviewer of major cultural and political figures, from Jay-Z to Zadie Smith and Patti Smith to Slavoj Zizek—joins Critchley to discuss how truth emerges from conversation.
